Here are 4 things to know before you buy a video game: Switch, Code, Light-emitting diode, and USB. Make sure you read our 2020 official guide on how to purchase a video game if you don't know anything about video games!

It could feel overwhelming to look at all the products if you haven't purchased video games yourself, or haven't had it at all. This is why we gathered some information for you so you can be more confident before buying a video game.

Things You Should Know

If you have some exposure to video games or related types of products, you might already know what some of the words mean. But we don't want to assume that you know and make you struggle while reading product descriptions. Here are the 4 words you need to know:

  • Switch: In electrical engineering, a switch is an electrical component that can disconnect or connect the conducting path in an electrical circuit, interrupting the electric current or diverting it from one conductor to another. The most common type of switch is an electromechanical device consisting of one or more sets of movable electrical contacts connected to external circuits.
  • Code: In communications and information processing, code is a system of rules to convert information—such as a letter, word, sound, image, or gesture—into another form or representation, sometimes shortened or secret, for communication through a communication channel or storage in a storage medium. An early example is the invention of language, which enabled a person, through speech, to communicate what they saw, heard, felt, or thought to others.
  • Light-emitting diode (LED): A light-emitting diode is a semiconductor light source that emits light when current flows through it. Electrons in the semiconductor recombine with electron holes, releasing energy in the form of photons.
  • USB: Universal Serial Bus is an industry standard that establishes specifications for cables and connectors and protocols for connection, communication and power supply between computers, peripherals and other computers. A broad variety of USB hardware exists, including several different connectors, of which USB-C is the most recent.

Appropriate Price Range

Video games are normally priced in the range of$5.95 - $679.95 per item. So if a video game's price is outside of this range, you should question if the product is actually sold, or the price is worth it.
